Meet Ms. Jennifer Tatum

The Gold Standard of Virtual Education requires gold standard educators and staff. At Compass’ Online Learning Program, we are fortunate enough to have had the talented and passionate Ms. Jennifer Tatum at our tuition-free public online school for eight years.

Ms. Tatum started out as an 8-grade social studies and English teacher and is now our K-8 Coordinator. We couldn’t be more proud to have Ms. Tatum on our staff – we asked her to share her story. We think any prospective scholar, learning coach, or educator would appreciate reading what she has to say. Enjoy!

How did you choose Compass Online?

When I initially looked for a job online, Compass was the first school I saw (AAS at the time). I had an 18-month-old child at home, and I wanted to be able to be home and have a flexible work schedule. I also had two older children as well that I wanted to be available for. I wanted to be in my own home, creating my own schedule and being productive and efficient with an online job. Now that I have been here for eight years, I can see that I have fallen in love with Compass Online and what it stands for. We LOVE our scholars! We also love our staff family. We are a great place to work because we appreciate our teachers and what they do on the daily for our scholars.”

Online Learning vs. Brick & Mortar

“There are many benefits to teaching online versus in a brick & mortar school. I love that we get to personalize our learning for each and every scholar. We are able to meet with our scholars one on one to dig deeper and help the scholars get a better understanding of a concept or topic. The scholars are able to create an environment at home (or wherever) that is conducive to them and their learning. We also get to use technology, and we are constantly adapting to the world and its changes. Our scholars also benefit from this, because they always use the most up-to-date technology in their classrooms, live labs, courses, etc.”

Mission & Vision

The Compass mission is “To inspire and develop innovative, creative, self-directed learners, one scholar at a time.” What does this mean to you specifically?

“Every day, our teachers inspire our scholars to be creative and take hold of their education. If they don’t, then who will? We want them to be independent learners and grow and adapt through their experiences online with their fellow scholars and teachers. I saw it as an 8-grade teacher and now as the K-8 Online Coordinator. In whatever capacity I am in, I try to always encourage growth and success in our scholars and our staff.”

Why Compass Online?

“You should enroll your scholar in Compass because we care about your scholar. We want them to be successful and learn the way they know how to learn. We promise to help your scholar grow and develop academically and socially/emotionally.”

Thank you, Ms. Tatum! You are such an inspiration, and we are honored to have you as our K-8 Coordinator after eight years of teaching with us. It’s apparent we are all believers in The Gold Standard in Virtual Education, and your passion helps us uphold that standard.
