Compass Charter Schools is proud of its scholars and uses its Scholar of the Month program to recognize their accomplishments. Scholars are nominated by their Supervising Teachers (ST) and staff. The program also ties into the Compass core values of achievement, respect, teamwork, integrity, and communication. Scholars are nominated by teachers and staff for their academic excellence, work ethic, leadership skills, and virtual involvement and selected by the leadership team for the monthly honor.

“I believe Moka Anthony should be the scholar of the month. On her vacation to Rome, she worked on a social studies final while there! The slides in her PowerPoint showed pictures of the Pantheon, Colosseum, the Basilica Di Santa Maria Maggiore, Pompeii, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Vatican with a detailed description of each. It was inspiring to see all the hands-on learning Moka was able to do in Rome. I am impressed by the deep learning apparent in all of Moka’s final tests and projects and have seen great growth in her work since the beginning of the school year. She has many passions and gives her all to each of them. She paints, participates in theater, and surfs. “There are many ways that Brenna exhibits our Compass Gold Standard ideals; I will list a few of them. First, she is extremely bright, so when she is sharing in live sync or submitting an assignment, it is insightful. Brenna is organized and careful in her work (keeping up with 3 Options A-G courses) — I can’t ever remember seeing such neat, color-coordinated notes *in every subject*! She is an extraordinary gymnast who works out hours upon hours and competes too, yet she makes time to do great work and get it turned in on time. And her baking: WOW. She is a gluten-free baker (part of her Culinary Arts elective), and I wish I could eat the assignment photos she sends! I know her family is glad she chose that course! “Ethan has been dynamic in all his courses displaying all the ARTIC Values all at once! This is a new scholar with Compass, and although his courses were assigned a little after school began, he still managed to jump in and take charge of his learning. I have been amazed at his desire to challenge himself and go above, and beyond to meet the Monthly Learning Goals/Objectives we set each LP! He was overwhelmed at the beginning with so much technology required in using our CCS platforms, but he has adapted energetically and now uses and accesses all with easy navigation. Throughout his courses, he has managed to learn and use Web 2.0 resources and tools without missing a beat as he stays on track with his learning. He is a great kid to watch, and I am excited to see what and how he will challenge himself next. Every teacher wants this type of high schooler in their classroom, and I’m sure his parents are really proud of him! I, too, am not only proud but kids like Ethan make teachers like us better.
