5 Modern Ways to Prepare for College

By July 20, 2022 Blog

Whether your scholar is starting Kindergarten or gearing up for high school, Compass Charter Schools’ Online Learning Program (Compass Online) prepares each scholar for a life full of opportunity. Our tuition-free K-12 public school celebrates over 10 years as the Gold Standard in Virtual Education, serving Los Angeles, San Diego, Yolo, and adjacent counties. We are the experts and have the wisdom to share how online learning prepares scholars for college.

Find Your Learning Style

Online learning allows for individualized education for every scholar’s learning style. This ensures no scholar is left behind, which is impossible in a large classroom of standard conformity. Online scholars learn the best practices for scheduling one-on-one teacher assistance and study habits for their personal learning style. If these skills are lacking, consider a school that adopts Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) teaching principals.

In Compass Online, we enhance our scholars’ study skills through our school-wide implementation of AVID strategies. The AVID model was designed specifically to adapt to different teaching and learning styles to prepare scholars for college. We are proud to be one of a few free online charter schools in the nation to earn the title of Certified AVID Site for our High School AVID Elective course.

Get Organized

Online education encourages independence, time management, and organization more than any other style of schooling. Online scholars learn to be responsible for their own learning and time-management. Because of the logistics with online education, scholars know how to manage their schedules, properly label documents, save them into organized folders, and invite virtual collaborators for feedback. These are all skills necessary for applying to and succeeding in college, let alone entering nearly any professional career.

If your scholar struggles with organization, consider the intimate experience of virtual learning. Your scholar could learn quite a lot of best practices from their teachers, counselors, and fellow scholars before graduating high school.

Discover Your School

Not all virtual learning is the same. Consider the options based on your scholar’s interests, the rigor and diversity of the curriculum, parent/guardian support (we refer to parents/guardians as learning coaches), and the school’s accomplishments. How much experience does the school have in teaching online? Will you feel alone or supported by experts in your scholar’s educational journey? How does the school cater to each scholar’s education to meet college and career goals?

Make sure to visit the virtual schools you find interesting, as you would a college campus. Understand the scholar-to-counselor ratio to ensure proper social, emotional, and mental health support. Get to know the staff and teachers. The learning coach-teacher-scholar relationship is very important – you’ll want to feel great about who you are working with on your scholar’s path to their dream college. We also suggest seeking testimonials.

Join Clubs

College organizations and clubs land on resumes for college and career consideration. The more your scholar is joining, participating in, and leading clubs in school, the more skilled they will be in leadership and making new connections. Virtual scholars learn to expand their interests and further expand their networks, which open up opportunities in college and any career.

If you have any questions about your scholar’s social life in virtual school, ask about the clubs and watch scholar testimonials

Start Early and Focus

Consider enrolling your scholar into a solid online learning program before high school. The earlier your scholar learns the skills mentioned above, the more likely they will feel prepared for college or any bright future. Does your scholar know what they want to be when they grow up? Virtual teachers and counselors guide each scholar’s coursework and experiences for their individual goals.

Compass’ Online Learning Program teaches grades K-12, and we are more than happy to meet you and your scholar for enrollment consideration in our tuition-free public schools.
