A Word from our Superintendent: This Month We Celebrate Thanksgiving and Achievement!

Greetings, Compass Family!

November is the month of thanks. Thank YOU for your hard work and dedication! I am proud to witness our scholars and learning coaches’ commitment towards their educational goals already this year and know there is so much more in store. As we enter the remainder of this semester, it is essential to take the time to give thanks to all of our Compass Family.

Our first stop on our ‘Giving Thanks Tour’ is to all of our veterans – Happy Veterans Day! Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served our country honorably during war or peacetime. Today we celebrate all the incredible women and men who have served our country!

We invite you to celebrate our staff members who have served: Jason Bee, CCS of Yolo Principal, and Oscar De Jesus, Accountability Coordinator. Mr. Bee served in the U.S. Navy from 1995 to 1999. He served as an Aviation’s Technician, Petty Officer Third Class, and served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, where he deployed part of the seventh fleet during the Gulf War’s Operation Southern Watch. Mr. Bee earned several medals and ribbons in the course of his service. Mr. De Jesus served in the U.S. Navy from 2001 to 2004. He was stationed at the Pentagon and was part of the Flag Staff (Flag Writer) for Chief of Naval Personnel (a 2-Star Admiral) and Chief of Naval Operations (a 3-Star Admiral). Mr. De Jesus was in the Navy Reserves from 2004 to 2008. Thank you both for your service!

Our next stop of our ‘Giving Thanks Tour’ is to all of our staff. I am thankful for our incredible team of teachers and staff who partner with our learning coaches, scholars, and each other to create a collaborative virtual learning community that best supports our scholars on their path towards excellence. We are active in ensuring our scholars have the opportunity to grow and excel in all areas, with the support of our counselors, AVID, English Learner Support, Scholar Success, Scholar Support, and Special Education teams. Our teachers and staff are committed to serving as role models to help scholars learn and witness our ARTIC core values of achievement, communication, teamwork, integrity, and respect.

Our final stop on our ‘Giving Thanks Tour’ is to all of our families. I am thankful for all our families’ partnerships and continued feedback during Coffee with Compass, Parent Advisory Council, Scholar Leadership Council, and Virtual Suggestion Box submissions. Together, we are creating an amazing Compass Experience for all of our stakeholders, and for that, my heart is filled with gratitude!

This month, we highlight the CCS core value of Achievement. Achievement is an integral part of the Compass Experience and is exercised in everything that we do. Our school-wide WIG (Wildly Important Goal) this year focuses on scholar engagement, and that 100% of our eligible scholars will graduate by the end of the 2020-21 school year! We can focus every day on accomplishing both small and large achievements to work towards this goal. And it will not be possible to achieve this WIG without the support of each and every one of you!

I also offer you The Energy Bus’ Principle #3 – Drive with Purpose with the above core value in mind. How will you work towards your graduation from CCS? How can you better achieve your purpose with the help of all of our various teams at CCS? How will you allow this purpose to drive and inspire you on a daily basis?

Compass will be closed from Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27, for our Fall Break. On behalf of Compass’s staff, THANK YOU for being an integral part of our Compass family!
