The Role Of A School Counselor

Education is in a constant state of change, and we have so many different models of education to choose from. Some families choose to continue with traditional models of schooling, while others seek more innovative models, through virtual learning, independent study or homeschooling. However, regardless of the type of school that you choose, one factor remains true for all models of education, and that is the importance of supportive school counselors for scholars and their families.

Proper counseling is a critical part of a successful education. It is a great way to help scholars who are struggling with their academics or in their personal life, and it is also a wonderful tool to support scholars who are excelling. Counseling can help positively shape scholars’ behaviors, personal development, academic performance, college and career readiness and so much more.

Of course, effective counseling is made possible by dedicated, caring and knowledgeable school counselors. They offer the guidance and support that scholars and their families need outside of the classroom. Compass Charter Schools (CCS) is proud to have a staff of trained and certified professional school counselors to enhance our scholars’ experiences. It’s essential that families assess the quality of counseling at their scholar’s school.

Quality counseling programs offer tailored support for scholars throughout their educational journey. Families with younger children can turn to their school counselors for assistance with their child’s social development and academic planning. It’s important to encourage younger scholars to build strong relationships with their school counselors so that they can excel in their academics, and create an overall more positive learning experience. The CCS counseling program is no different and the team works tirelessly to support the unique needs of our scholars.

High school is arguably one of the most important times for scholars and their families to call upon their school counselors for support. High school scholars have several major life changes to look forward to, and counselors can help ease their transition process. Scholars can turn to their school counselors for emotional support as they grow into young adults and plan for their futures. For example, earlier this year, CCS counselors hosted an online workshop to teach middle school and high school scholars about the causes and effects of stress. The counselors shared healthy coping practices for stress with the scholars and led an open discussion. It’s essential that high school scholars participate in these types of workshops with their school counselors to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

School counselors can help ensure that high school scholars meet their graduation requirements and are properly preparing for life after high school. For scholars who are struggling with their academics, school counselors can help them create a plan of action to get back on the right track and graduate from high school. CCS is also proud to have school counselors who specialize in helping scholars plan and prepare for college. The counseling team supports college and career readiness by offering enriching college workshops, fostering rigorous academic preparation, encouraging early college planning, and guiding scholars and their families through the college admission and financial aid processes.

There are also countless online resources, like Naviance, to support scholars as they prepare for their future. CCS uses Naviance to help scholars plan and prepare for their college or career experiences after graduation. The program guides scholars and encourages them to connect personal interests to long term goals. It’s a great way for scholars to find appropriate scholarships and track their college applications. It’s critical that school counselors are well-versed in programs like Naviance to support high school scholars.

School counselors serve a vital role in maximizing scholar success. Through advocacy and collaboration, they promote equity and access to rigorous educational experiences for all scholars. They are here to help scholars establish personal goals, develop future plans, and provide services to meet individual needs. School counselors are here to support your success!
