Thousand Oaks, CA – Compass Charter Schools (Compass) of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Yolo have been selected as 2021 National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) Exceptional Virtual Charter Schools in Special Education for the second year in a row. This award is the highest level of recognition that a charter school can achieve through NASET. This distinction is bestowed upon select qualified charter schools that provide specialized special needs services and supports. Schools must meet rigorous professional criteria and have demonstrated truly exceptional dedication, commitment, and achievement in the field of special education.

“At Compass, we work diligently to provide the highest quality of education and services to our scholars. Our Compass community embraces all those with special needs and encourages every stakeholder, from scholars to parents, to staff and beyond, to work with this incredible population of scholars,” shares J.J. Lewis, Superintendent & CEO. “On behalf of our entire Compass community, we are honored to be recognized again by NASET as Exceptional Charter Schools in Special Education.”

“The Special Education Department at Compass is excellent. They go above and beyond in helping my sixth-grade scholar excel and succeed,” shares Randi Pugh, chair of the Compass Parent Advisory Council, secretary of the Board of Directors, and parent representative to the El Dorado County Charter SELPA Community Advisory Committee. “Our Case Manager, Mrs. Clifton, is diligent in making sure that my son’s services are in place, and his Supervising Teacher, Mrs. McCaulley, is supportive and always there for us. Thank you, Compass, for all that you have done for my son and me; I am so proud to be part of this family!”

The Special Education Department prioritizes serving all of its scholars’ needs and helps them reach their greatest potential. Compass provides support services for scholars with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). For scholars in need of specialized academic instruction, the Education Specialists offer these services in a virtual format or in-person as needed. In addition, specialized contractors provide IEP services for speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychological services to provide assessment and therapy services.

The Special Education Department here at Compass is designed to support our scholars and their learning coaches in this virtual learning environment. Scholars need to develop metacognitive and self-determination skills, and we strive to empower our scholars with these skills through education,” shares Lynn Jabuka, education specialist and chair of the Compass Special Education Advisory Committee.
