Thousand Oaks, CA, September 24, 2021. Compass Charter Schools (Compass) is excited to announce that J.J. Lewis, Superintendent & CEO, has been selected by Sacramento State as part of their Student Academic Success Day, to receive the 2021 Equity Principals Award. The Equity Principals Award recognizes regional leadership for their commitment to educational equity and scholastic success. It will be presented by Sacramento State next Monday, September 27, during the session “Principals and Leaders’ Summit Rejuvenated to Lead: Championing the Cause of Success” at 10 am.

“J.J. has been a supportive leader in our Compass Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee,” shares Sarah Eagleton, online elementary school teacher and chair of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. “He is working alongside the DEI Committee to achieve the goals we have established for our upcoming school year. Compass is transforming its school culture with a strong focus on inclusion and equity with his leadership. We are fortunate to have him as a brave advocate and leader at Compass.”

Lewis has served as the Superintendent & CEO of Compass since October 2015. He holds his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University in history and political science. In addition, he has a Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate from Georgetown University and is a Certified Fundraising Executive. Lewis is currently finishing his Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California, where his research is focused on the perceptions of gay male public school employees regarding the inclusivity of their workplace.

Lewis is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. In addition, he serves on many boards and committees, including the American Association of School Personnel Administrators Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, AVID National Superintendents Collaborative, Digital Learning Collaborative, The Charter Schools Resource Journal Editorial Board, and the Wellness for Educators Board of Directors. Lewis is also on the Central Michigan University National Alumni Association Board of Directors and serves as the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity West Coast Director.

“I am truly honored to receive a 2021 Equity Principals Award for K-12 educational equity leaders by Sacramento State,” shares Lewis. “Diversity and inclusion are very close to my heart and something that I work daily to instill at Compass Charter Schools, professionally, and in pursuing my doctorate at USC. I am humbled to be selected as an awardee and believe this is a testament to the collective work we are doing at Compass.”

Student Academic Success 2021 is proud to celebrate a theme of “I Fly: Resilient, Relentless, and Resourceful.” The event is designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, and community guests for virtual workshop sessions, engagement components, and resource fair components, all designed to promote success.
