Thousand Oaks, CA –  Compass Charter Schools (CCS) announced scholars Ian C., an eighth-grade scholar from Fountain Valley, Jacob C., a fourth-grade scholar also from Fountain Valley, and Taylor B., fifth-grade scholar from Orange, as the winners of its inaugural Spelling Bee. The spelling bee was held on Tuesday, January 16 at our Orange County Learning Center in Santa Ana. The winners were selected by process of elimination during three rounds of the competition.

“Congratulations to all of the scholars who participated in our spelling bee,” said Rebecca MacAlpine, Scholar Engagement Coordinator. “Our scholars are truly advanced with impressive vocabularies and strong memorization skills. I am so grateful for all of the amazing support that our scholars, parents, and staff showed to those who participated in the spelling bee. I am so proud of our supportive, spirited and encouraging Compass community!”

The spelling bee was organized into three competition rounds – one for elementary school scholars, another for middle school scholars, and a finals round. The competition was open to scholars in kindergarten through eighth-grade and over 30 scholars participated. Each scholar was presented a vocabulary word by the moderator and asked to properly spell the word aloud. The event’s overall winner, Ian C., will move on to represent CCS at a regional competition, the Orange County Register Spelling Bee, on Monday, February 26. The winning scholars received a certificate and will receive a special mention in the Compass Chronicle, CCS’ school newsletter.

“Congratulations to Ian, Jacob and Taylor for winning our inaugural Spelling Bee,” said J.J. Lewis, CCS President & CEO. “We challenged all of the participating scholars to put their vocabulary skills to the test in front of our Compass community. These scholars, along with all of the spelling bee’s participants, met that challenge and have a done an amazing job sharing their skills and inspiring their peers. I know I am speaking for all of our Compass community when I share that we are so proud of everyone’s hard work, and in wishing Ian good luck as he prepares for the Orange County Register Spelling Bee!”

CCS is proud of all the participating scholars and those who supported the contestants. CCS continues to offer scholars the opportunity to play a leading role in their school community and encourages scholars to demonstrate their skills and share their school spirit.
