I met with Compass Charter Schools alum Sean Morkus and was very impressed! Sean is in college, pursuing his degree in history. He has a passion for giving back and making a difference. Sean shared that he has thrived in online school and owes much of that success to Compass. Sean had an incredible experience at Compass and shared this with Janae Smith, Director of Online Learning:

“I appreciate all of your support that you provided while I was attending and graduating from Compass Charter Schools. I will be graduating from Santiago Canyon College in June 2021 with a major in history and a 4.0 GPA. My online learning at Compass helped prepare me for online learning at Santiago Canyon College, with all scholars learning online due to the pandemic. I will be transferring to Cal State University Fullerton to earn a bachelor’s degree in history and teaching credentials to become a high school history teacher. I am fortunate to have had such strong support from people, including you, and I feel that it is important to thank you and others who have helped me along my way of getting an excellent education and deciding on my career path.”

From August 2015 through the present, Sean has been providing five to ten hours per week in volunteer work! He picks up and disposes of trash and dog poop along the two-mile-long public hiking and bicycle trail around the Walnut Canyon Reservoir located in Anaheim Hills for the City of Anaheim Water Department. This volunteer work activity helps preserve the trail’s beauty, cleanliness, and safety. Visitors at the reservoir become more aware of their responsibility to keep the trail clean and safe by seeing Sean’s actions. Sean also reports to his supervisor any unusual visitor activity regarding drinking alcohol, graffiti, overgrowth of weeds, and drainage ditch blockage. This experience has helped him develop a strong sense of responsibility, connectedness, and pride in his community and develop his observation and communication skills. Incredible work, Sean. We are #CompassProud! Continue the excellent work and follow your passions!

Pictured here are Sean visiting the Nixon Museum, Military Museum, Iowa Battleship, and his volunteer work for Anaheim. Sean has visited numerous aircraft carriers, battleships, submarines, and military museums to record images on military equipment and vessels, as he has a passion for learning about the history of conflicts and wars.
