Compass Back to School Picnics Start the School Year Off Right!

By September 28, 2022 Blog, Uncategorized

It has been an incredible start to the school year since our first day on August 31! We welcomed back former scholars and greeted new scholars and families. We look forward to all this school year offers as we wrap up learning period 1, and there is so much more on the horizon!

Compass exceeds expectations for how education can be taught through personalized virtual learning. Compass responds to each scholar’s unique needs, dreams, and background while preparing them to successfully pursue their goals after graduation by forming deep partnerships with teachers, scholars, and families. In partnership with families and dynamic staff, Compass brings various teaching experiences, learning styles, and wrap-around supports to serve California scholars along their educational journey equitably.

In celebration, we hosted our Back to School Picnics across California this past Friday, September 23. They were a huge success! The picnics brought together scholars, learning coaches, and staff. Scholars and their families enjoyed visiting in person, playing games like Jenga, Twister, and giant checkers together, and we partnered with PBS to bring a special guest, Curious George!

We visited Pepper Park in San Diego; our chaperones were Danielle DelNegro, Engagement Coordinator, Annette Metten, Supervising Teacher, and Monique Grimes, Elementary School Teacher. And we visited Tewinkle Park in Costa Mesa. Oscar De Loyer, Special Assistant to the Superintendent, Tiffany Somerville, Supervising Teacher, Lauren Suggett, Supervising Teacher, Donnell Tyler, Community Provider Coordinator, and Stephanie Lee, Supervising Teacher, were chaperones.

“I had an amazing time being the lead chaperone for our Welcome Back Picnic in Costa Mesa. A special thank you to Stephanie Lee, Donnell Tyler, Tiffany Somerville, and Lauren Suggett for chaperoning. You all were terrific and so engaged with the families. Everyone had an absolute blast.” – Oscar De Loyer, Special Assistant to the Superintendent

Compass enjoyed the day at Oak Grove Park in Fontana. Chaperones were Brianna Attalla, Supervising Teacher, Sharlie Walker, Supervising Teacher, and Whitney Perea, Supervising Teacher.

“We had so much fun today at the Back to School Picnic! Thank you, Danielle DelNegro, Engagement Coordinator and Rebecca MacAlpine, Director of Engagement, for all your hard work in planning today’s event. My kids loved hanging out with Curious George and meeting lots of fun friends.” –Whitney Perea, Supervising Teacher.

We visited McCambridge Park in Burbank. Chaperones were Kim Noller, Middle School Teacher, Terri Ashley-MacQuarrie, Supervising Teacher, and Andrea McCormick, Educational Specialist. And we visited Larkey Park in Walnut Creek. Chaperones were Vanessa Beyer, Outreach Coordinator, Heather McFarland, Supervising Teacher, and Lisa Huerta, Supervising Teacher.

We visited McKinley Park in Sacramento. Our chaperone was Melissa Mayer, Scholar Success Coordinator.

“Danielle DelNegro and Rebecca MacAlpine! Just WOW! The Welcome Back Picnic in Sacramento still has me smiling! All the scholars and learning coaches were thrilled to get together, meet other families and engage with one another in fun activities. (Hide and Go Seek with Curious George? YES, PLEASE!) Danielle, you made being a chaperone effortless thanks to your organization and attention to detail. A big shout out to everyone who helped!” -Melissa Mayer, Scholar Success Coordinator

“Shining the biggest and brightest light on everyone who participated in our Back to School picnics! Coordinating NINE picnics was no easy task, and I certainly couldn’t have done it without each of your willingness to have supplies mailed to you, coordinate pizza orders, and step up to the plate when inevitable roadblocks appeared! I wish I could give you all the biggest high fives and hugs!” -Danielle DelNegro, Engagement Coordinator.
