A Word From Our Superintendent:
A Leader During Unprecedented Times

May is a month of celebration and continued leadership opportunities for Compass Charter Schools. There is only a little over a month left of the school year, and it is hard to believe so much has changed in such a short period. We have been honored at Compass to be able to share some of our expertise and experience in navigating the virtual world of education to those learning this way for the first time. Our April blogs focused a whole series on advice from our staff, on working and teaching from home.

Last Friday, May 1, we celebrated School Principal’s Day. We extended sincere appreciation to Ashley Daugherty, Online K-8 Coordinator, Erin Smith, Director of Online Learning, Janae Smith, Online High School Coordinator, Kristy Smith, Director of Options Learning, Ruth Chavez-Rivera, Options Regional Coordinator, Laura Harvey, Options Regional Coordinator, Karle Roberts, Options Regional Coordinator, Michelle Vreeman, Options Regional Coordinator and Sharlie Walker, Options Regional Coordinator or providing the necessary supports to their teams throughout the year, which in turn supports our scholars along their educational journey.

This week we recognize our fantastic teaching staff during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Our 127 teachers show tremendous dedication to our scholars, so let’s shine a bright spotlight on them. Show your favorite teacher your appreciation by nominating them for our Scholars’ Choice Employee of Year Award. Our scholars are also invited to send thank-you letters to express thanks to a teacher or another member of our amazing team. Create artwork, poems, video messages, or even send them a virtual award! Join us on social media throughout the rest of the week, using #ThankATeacher and @CompassCs to share your favorite memories about your teachers.

Please also join us in celebrating National Charter School Week next week (May 10-16). National Charter Schools Week is an annual opportunity to raise awareness about our amazing school! Let’s highlight the academic successes of our scholars, learning coaches, teachers, and staff. This year’s theme is Above and Beyond. It speaks to the extraordinary work of charter schools to serve their students, families, and others in the community during this pandemic. Please join our National Charter Schools Week celebration by posting, tweeting, tagging, and sharing pictures and videos with us, using #CharterSchoolsWeek and #CharterLove. I look forward to seeing why you enjoy being part of our Compass family!

Next Wednesday, May 13, is the California Day of the Teacher, and this year’s theme is California Teachers: Inspiring Generations. Continue to celebrate your teachers by sending a thank you note or message of gratitude on social media by tagging @CompassCS and including both #DayOfTheTeacher and #GreatTeaching.

Our final celebration is honoring our incredible staff during Classified School Employees Week (May 17-23). Every day, Compass employees are building connections and inspiring lives. From teaching scholars vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to Compass. This week, let our staff know you appreciate them by sharing your gratitude on social media (tag @CompassCS and use #CSEW2020), send them a thank-you note, or by nominating them as our Scholars’ Choice Employee of the Year.

We are excited to announce that Compass Charter Schools of Yolo has been granted initial accreditation status by WASC through June 30, 2023!

Thank you for your continued support and belief in Compass. I look forward to continuing our growth together to provide school choice to scholars throughout California. Enjoy the month of May as we celebrate our teachers, staff, and of course, you!
