5 Healthy Lifestyle Choices for Scholars

By October 24, 2018 Blog

This week, Compass Charter Schools (CCS) is celebrating Red Ribbon Week! It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness about healthy life choices and living in a drug-free America. To celebrate, all week long CCS’ scholars are participating in Spirit Week to show their support for a drug-free America and to show off their spectacular school spirit. They are wearing crazy tourist apparel, fun Hawaiian outfits, sporting the color red, and even dressing up in their best Western dress! Of course, we can’t forget CCS spirit gear!

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, we’re sharing five healthy lifestyle choices that scholars can make and enjoy living in a drug-free America:

Eat Healthy Food

The first lifestyle choice on our list shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s no secret that eating healthy has a lot to do maintaining good health. We encourage scholars and their families to seek professional advice about nutrition because a healthy meal plan may vary from one person to another. However, in general, it’s usually best to eat plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables each day while incorporating smaller portions of grains and proteins. Our scholars spend time learning about healthy eating and smart food choices during their health class. Families can make eating healthy a fun activity by spending time together cooking a healthy meal and eating together!

Exercise

Exercise is definitely another common healthy choice that scholars can make. Our scholars complete daily physical education (PE) logs to track their activity and ensure that they are staying healthy by staying active. There are so many ways that scholars can exercise while having fun. For example, some scholars choose to take swimming, karate, dancing or skating lessons. Other scholars choose to ride their bike, walk their dog or enjoy playing at a local park. We encourage families to explore different types of exercise because doing so can help scholars discover new interests, passions, and hobbies.

Regular Communication

Communication is an important skill that can help scholars live a healthy lifestyle. Parents can invite their scholars to communicate and share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas on a regular basis. Healthy, consistent communication allows scholars to comfortably express themselves, which often has a positive impact on their mental and emotional health. Open communication often helps parents better understand their children and properly support them. Families can consider having daily conversations during meal times, bedtime, or even during car rides. We encourage parents to spark conversations with their children as often as possible anytime, anywhere!

Sleep

It’s very important that scholars get enough sleep each night. We encourage families to consult their medical provider to receive guidance on how many hours of sleep their scholars should get each night. Often it is recommended that children receive about eight hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest can help them stay focused and perform well during the day. Their bodies also tend to grow significantly while sleeping and recover when they are not feeling well. Parents can support their children by helping them create a consistent bedtime routine. Having a routine can help children properly calm their bodies from the day’s excitement and fall into a healthy sleep for the night. We encourage families to consider incorporating storytime to prepare for bed or playing soft, gentle music to help their children relax before falling asleep. There are a wide variety of techniques that scholars and their families can use to create an effective bedtime routine and ensure that their scholars are well rested and prepared for each new day!

Choose a Hobby

Having a hobby or a passion is the final healthy lifestyle choice that we encourage scholars to consider. Hobbies often challenge scholars physically and mentally, which can have a positive impact on their health. There are countless hobbies that they can consider including painting, drawing, cooking, photography, collecting specific items, playing music or a sport, and so much more. These activities can help scholars meet other children and make new friends. They can introduce them to new life experiences and challenges, and help them consider a path for the future. We encourage scholars to explore several different hobbies to discover their passions and personal interests.
