Emergent Multilingual Scholars
EMERGENT MULTILINGUAL SCHOLARS
English Learner support services at Compass.
Compass Charter Schools provides the highest quality of English Learner Support Services.
OVERVIEW
We call our EL scholars Emergent Multilingual Scholars.
Here at Compass we call our EL scholars Emergent Multilingual Scholars (EMS) because we consider their primary language to be an asset. Emergent Multilingual Scholars (EMS) are scholars who are developing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English. The EMS population is made up of scholars with varying degrees of exposure to English and levels of competencies in their first language.
English Language Skills
Regardless of language literacy background, EMS must acquire fundamental reading, academic language, and conversational skills in English in order to be successful in their academics.
EL Coordinator Support
At CCS, our EL Coordinator works closely with our teachers to ensure the academic curriculum is accessible to scholars to meet grade-level standards and gain English language proficiency.
LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PROGRAM
Structured English Immersion.
At Compass Charter Schools, we offer a Structured English Immersion (SEI) program (EC Section 305[a][2]) which is tailored for our multilingual learners.
Instruction in English
This program ensures that nearly all classroom instruction is conducted in English, with a curriculum and presentation specifically designed for students learning English.
Designated and Integrated ELD
As a minimum offering, scholars receive Designated ELD with Lexia Core5 for grades TK-5, Lexia PowerUp for grades 6-12, Lexia English for grades TK-12, and have access to grade-level academic subject matter content with Integrated ELD.
LEXIA
Curriculum solutions that support multilingual learners.
Lexia’s curriculum solutions specifically target skills that help Emergent Multilingual Scholars develop fundamental skills while providing educators and learning coaches with real-time performance data that pinpoints scholars’ skill gaps to strengthen interventions.
Personalized learning
Lexia Core5 Reading, Lexia PowerUp Literacy, and Lexia English online curricula offer personalized learning that supports multilingual learners in acquiring fundamental reading, writing, academic language, and conversation skills in English in order to be successful in the academic environment.
VIRTUAL SUPPORT SESSIONS
Live virtual support sessions.
Compass Charter Schools values each individual scholar. EMS receive live virtual support sessions to help differentiate instruction to meet the needs of scholars who may be at different language proficiency levels.
Session Focus
Virtual sessions focus on listening and speaking.
ENGLISH LEARNER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
ELAC supports English learner programs and services.
