OVERVIEW
Multilingual Learner Scholars
At Compass, we honor our English Learners as Multilingual Learner Scholars (MLS) and celebrate their native language as a powerful strength. Our EMS community includes scholars at all stages of English development, as well as varying levels of proficiency in their home language. We are dedicated to helping every scholar build core conversational and academic English skills, empowering them to excel both in school and beyond.
English Language Skills
Regardless of language literacy background, MLS must acquire fundamental reading, academic language, and conversational skills in English in order to be successful in their academics.
EL Manager Support
At CCS, our English Language Support Manager works closely with teachers to ensure classroom instruction is accessible, empowering scholars to meet grade-level standards while developing English proficiency. Designated English Language Development (ELD) is directly monitored by the English Language Support Manager and utilizes the Lexia Learning curriculum, supported by targeted small-group virtual sessions.
LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PROGRAM
Structured English Immersion.
Compass Charter Schools provides a Structured English Immersion (SEI) program (EC Section 305[a][2]) designed specifically for multilingual learners. In this program, teachers support instruction primarily in English using specialized strategies to support language acquisition.
Instruction in English
This program ensures that nearly all classroom instruction is conducted in English, with a curriculum and presentation specifically designed for students learning English.
Designated and Integrated ELD
- Designated ELD: Tailored instruction incorporating Cengage materials Trailblazers (Grades K-4), Impact (Grades 5-8), Lift (9-12) , Lexia Core5 (Grades TK–5), Lexia PowerUp (Grades 6–12), and Lexia English (Grades TK–12).
- Integrated ELD: Scaffolding across all core subjects to ensure full access to grade-level academic content.
Reclassification Criteria
- AB 2555: Signed into law on September 27, 2026, AB 2555 streamlines California's English Learner (EL) reclassification process from four criteria down to a single statewide criterion.1
- New Reclassification Criterion: Effective immediately, students who achieved an Overall Performance Level (PL) 4 on the Summative ELPAC or an Overall PL
LEXIA
Curriculum solutions that support Multilingual Learners.
Through Cengage and Lexia learning solutions, Multilingual Scholars receive adaptive, personalized instruction to build essential English skills:
- Cengage: Delivers structured language acquisition support across academic content areas.
- Lexia Core5 Reading (K–5) & Lexia PowerUp Literacy (6–12): Strengthen foundational literacy and reading comprehension skills.
- Lexia English (TK–12): Builds speaking, listening, and grammar proficiency for academic environments.
Real-time performance tracking allows educators and learning coaches to identify specific skill gaps and personalize instruction for each scholar.
Personalized Learning
Lexia Core5 Reading, Lexia PowerUp Literacy, and Lexia English online curricula offer personalized learning that supports multilingual learners in acquiring fundamental reading, writing, academic language, and conversation skills in English in order to be successful in the academic environment.
VIRTUAL SUPPORT SESSIONS
Live Virtual Support Sessions
To ensure every scholar receives personalized attention, Compass Charter Schools provides live virtual support sessions for Multilingual Scholars (EMS). These sessions adapt instruction to fit varying proficiency levels, giving scholars targeted practice in listening, speaking, reading, and academic language to build confidence and mastery.
ENGLISH LEARNER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
ELAC supports our Multilingual Learner programs and services.
A school-level committee composed of parents, staff, and community members designated to advise school officials on English learner programs and services.
