COMMON QUESTIONS

Community Provider FAQ

Find answers about eligibility, required documents, approvals, payment, and becoming a Compass Community Provider.

What is a Community Provider?

A Community Provider may be an individual or company that provides:

  1. General educational services offered in person or virtually to Compass scholars.
  2. General educational products or curriculum, in print or digital form. Materials providers do not have live interaction with scholars.
Are there restrictions on the content or pricing of services and materials?

Yes. All content must be nonsectarian, or non-religious. Rates and pricing must be basic, economical, and consistent with industry standards. Compass cannot use general educational funding for assessments, therapy, or testing.

Does a business need a referral to submit a pre-application?

Yes. The business must provide the name of either an enrolled Compass family or a Compass staff member.

How long does the application process take?

Due to the volume of applications received during peak periods, including summer, September, and school breaks, and the detailed onboarding requirements, the full process may take approximately 4 to 12 weeks.

What documents are required from a business providing in-person or virtual services?

Service providers are generally required to submit:

  1. A current W-9 form.
  2. A Department of Justice-cleared background check completed using the Compass Live Scan process for each instructor who interacts with scholars, or proof of an Originating Agency Identifier number.
  3. Proof of business liability insurance.
  4. A business license based on city or county requirements. When a business license is not required locally, Compass will require another form of business verification.
What is the Compass fingerprint policy?

Every person who has direct contact with Compass scholars must complete fingerprinting using the Compass Live Scan form or be fingerprinted under the provider business’s Originating Agency Identifier number.

Compass cannot access fingerprint results from a previous Live Scan completed for another agency, employer, or state.

Can an instructor who lives outside California apply?

No. All instructors, including virtual instructors, must reside in California.

Is there an age requirement for instructors?

Yes. Instructors must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States.

Is renter’s or homeowner’s insurance accepted?

No. Business liability insurance is required for every service provider. Businesses considered high risk may also need to add additional-insured language to their policy.

What documents are required from a business providing materials?

Materials providers are generally required to submit:

  1. A current W-9 form.
  2. A business license based on city or county requirements. When a business license is not required locally, Compass will require another form of business verification.
Are there any other requirements to become a Community Provider?

Yes. Providers must maintain a working business website. Social media accounts alone are not accepted.

The website should include enough current information—such as services, scheduling, and pricing—for families to submit an order request through their supervising teacher.

How are Community Providers paid?

Community Providers are paid on a net-30 basis. Providers may receive payment by check or ACH transfer after services have been completed or materials delivered and Compass has received a correct invoice.

Will Compass advertise my business?

Once approved, the business will be listed in the public Compass Community Provider directory.

Approved providers may also be invited to submit information for possible inclusion in a family newsletter. Provider features are included as space permits and are not guaranteed.
