Uniform Complaint Procedures

This notice provides information about the dangers of synthetic drugs, counterfeit pills, and fentanyl.
Synthetic Drug Awareness
Synthetic Drugs and Fentanyl Dangers
California Education Code section 48985.5 requires charter schools to annually inform parents and guardians about the dangers associated with synthetic drugs.
Brightly colored fentanyl, sometimes called “rainbow fentanyl,” has been found in pills, powders, and blocks that may resemble candy or sidewalk chalk.
Any pill that does not come directly from a licensed health care
provider or pharmacist may contain fentanyl and can be deadly.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid. Counterfeit pills may be made to resemble legitimate prescription medications, and a person may not know that fentanyl is present.
Youth overdose data cited in the current notice
- California emergency department visits involving nonfatal opioid overdoses among youth ages 10–19 increased from 379 in 2018 to 1,222 in 2020.
- Opioid-related overdose deaths among California youth ages 10–19 increased from 54 in 2018 to 274 in 2020.
- Fentanyl-related overdose deaths among California youth ages 10–19 increased from 36 in 2018 to 261 in 2020.
Social media and counterfeit-drug risks
Drug traffickers may use social media platforms, temporary posts, direct messages, coded language, and emojis to advertise and sell counterfeit prescription pills and other dangerous drugs.
Conversations may move to encrypted messaging applications, and payment may be requested through mobile payment platforms. Pills purchased through social media or an unlicensed source may contain fentanyl or other unknown substances.
Steps families can take
- Stay aware of drug-trafficking risks on social media and messaging applications.
- Talk with scholars about the dangers of counterfeit pills and medications obtained outside a licensed pharmacy.
- Do not take medication that was not prescribed to you and provided by a licensed pharmacist.
- Share the message that one counterfeit pill can be deadly.
- Contact a Compass counselor when additional support or resources are needed.
